Preseason DFS is a different beast. Unlike the regular season, our main job is to identify players who will get the most playing time. Of course, that’s easier said than done. Our team spends an unhealthy amount of time researching to compile the Depth Chart Notes and Top Plays (below). For showdown slates, please consult Cody Main’s article.
QUARTERBACK
TIER 1
Gardner Minshew, Arizona – We know that Jacoby Brissett won’t play and Carson Beck (ribs) is still recovering from an injury sustained earlier in the preseason. That leaves just Minshew and camp body Kedon Slovis to handle the entirety of Week 2’s game. Cardinals ace beat reporter Darren Urban suggested that Minshew will play “at least a half,” indicating there is playing-time upside for a QB who has completed 64.2% of his preseason passes for 6.2 YPA and a 3:1 TD-to-INT ratio.
TIER 2
Sam Howell, Dallas – Dallas will once again be rolling with only Howell and Joe Milton III. We expect each to play exactly one half, as they did in Week 1. We give the slight edge here to Howell as the more polished preseason passer, having completed 66.7% of his preseason passes for 7.3 YPA and a 7:2 TD-to-INT ratio.
Joe Milton III, Dallas – Milton has the same playing-time outlook as Howell, in loosely the same offensive environment, but he’s been a worse preseason passer, completing 53.6% of his passes for 6.0 YPA and a 2:1 TD-to-INT ratio. He did look like a reformed man in Week 1, completing 80% of his passes for 107 yards, and he does offer something with his legs, adding a 30/125/1 rushing line through seven preseason appearances.
Tommy DeVito, New England – We don’t have official word on the playing-time distribution for New England, but we again expect DeVito and Behren Morton to split Saturday’s game evenly, as they did in Week 1. DeVito should benefit from playing with the more polished skill-position group to start the game and has had stints of regular-season success as a more developed passer.
