Passing Game Overview
Declared Carolina’s starting quarterback at the outset of training camp, No. 1 overall pick Bryce Young is considered pro-ready out of Alabama despite standing 5-foot-10 at 204 pounds. Young used his legs sparingly in college — he averaged 4.8 rushing yards per game — and is now engineering Frank Reich’s run-centric, slow-paced offense. Even as he’s drawn Drew Brees comparisons, there just doesn’t appear to be much statistical upside for Young out of the gate. His supporting cast is a major work in progress.
In a Panthers wideout room that still needs to be sorted out, Adam Thielen looks like the favorite for early-season snaps after securing $14 million guaranteed on a three-year, $25 million deal. Turning 33 before the season, Thielen’s 2022 metrics revealed a player falling off the cliff. His 1.15 yards-per-route-run average ranked 88th among qualified wide receivers, while Thielen managed a career-worst 10.2 yards per reception. Thielen profiles almost solely as a veteran presence for a youth-laden offense.
Drafted 39th overall out of Ole Miss, Jonathan Mingo is the latest highly-picked receiver from the Rebels’ program, following DK Metcalf, A.J. Brown, and Elijah Moore. With prototypical size (6-foot-2/220), Mingo has a shot to become Young’s go-to target in Year 1 and should benefit from his experience playing all over the formation in college. Mingo is a wildcard with immense immediate opportunity.
