We’re going to get a lot of stuff wrong, but sifting through usage metrics can help us work through what matters and what doesn’t. That’s the goal of this article: to break down the most actionable takeaways from each week in a concise, numbers-filled format and work through what’s important. Note: From this point on, we will only focus on teams that are still alive for the Super Bowl. Let’s get right to it:
1. Pat Bryant got concussed early and Troy Franklin hurt his hamstring. This left the Broncos with three available wide receivers for most of the game. Courtland Sutton remained the clear WR1 despite an overall quiet game with 47 routes on 52 dropbacks, then Lil’Jordan Humphrey (67% snaps, 37 routes) and Marvin Mims Jr. (65% snaps, 37 routes) also stepped into big roles. Humphrey is clearly the Bryant replacement — he ran a route on at least 52.5% of dropbacks in both Week 15 and Week 17 without Bryant — while Mims likely sees the biggest boost if Franklin misses. Mims was also hugely productive, catching all eight of his targets for 93 yards and a clutch touchdown, and it’s possible his expanded role holds even if Franklin plays next week. If not, it’ll be Sutton, Humphrey, Mims, and Elijah Moore catching balls from Jarrett Stidham.
2. RJ Harvey‘s 29 routes on 52 dropbacks marked a season-high figure in route participation for him.
