We all love the term sleeper, but making sure you hit your first 4-5 picks is a huge deal in fantasy hoops. If you’re drafting in a snake format, the teams picking 1-2 have a massive advantage compared to teams picking at the end of the draft. I’d suggest instituting a third-round reversal, but let’s go through some of my favorite early picks in drafts. These are the guys that’ll be targeting in the first 40 picks of category-based drafts. In other words, I have them ahead of ADP. Of course, guys could slide that I may take instead, so don’t forget that the Top 150 will reflect how I feel about where these guys should go.
It’s pretty clear to me that category-based drafts should go Victor Wembanyama, Nikola Jokic, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and Luka Doncic in that order.
Joel Embiid (C, Philadelphia) – You guys all know the deal on Embiid. He’s really the only guy who can come close to matching what Wemby and Jokic can do. He was even better than them per game last year for nine-cat value, and adding Paul George shouldn’t affect him too much. Embiid’s C&S game is part of the reason why he was so incredible per game at a 57.5 eFG%. There’s some serious risk on him, and most years I’d rather just play it safe and pass on him. It’s just not going to be easy to make up ground on those who had an earlier pick.
