I personally can’t believe we’re basically at the halfway point of the season (maybe a little more?), as it feels like we were playing The Masters Main Event just yesterday. But here we are at one of my favorite tournaments of the year, the Memorial Tournament held at the course known as “Jack’s Place.” It’s been an ok year for me so far, which started poorly but has picked up a bit over the last few weeks since The Masters, and it seems like it’s been a really good year for ETR subscribers so far. Last week, the crew notched another lotto win from PantherFan/DonGDonatelli, who I know has been a long-time subscriber to ETR. There were other screenshots as well in showdown and classic, which you always love to see. It’s good to see the golf Discord back to producing winners and also providing good conversation (and bits, of course), even if you have to endure GordonBombayOBV’s diatribes on Chandler Blanchet every once in a while.
Charles Schwab Challenge – Recap
It was a thrilling weekend at the Charles Schwab Challenge, as the course started off way easier than we thought and turned into a super tough test for the leaders on Saturday and Sunday. It was really interesting to see the juxtaposition between Th/Fr and the weekend. Just goes to show that golf truly is a variable sport, as there are so many factors that go into it. It’s a big reason why I think projections are overplayed, especially bad ones we see across the industry. The projections here at ETR are pretty good, but even then, I am still skeptical about their long-term viability in DFS. Nevertheless, they give us information, which is where the edge really is. Let’s take a look at the winning lineup submitted by our very own Panther Fan.
- It followed the traditional 10/9/8/7/7/7 build, successfully staying out of the 6Ks and pairing two high-priced players that came in with reasonable ownership. Henley squeezed in particular, and I think that’s something to note. Every week, there are a couple of players with good projections that end up coming down in ownership, making them the best or one of the best plays on the slate. This week, Henley was that guy. Kudos to PantherFan for being on it.
- It came in at 59% cumulative ownership, just under that 60-80% range we normally target, but it is important to remember Henley’s ownership came down by 5-6 points. With a well-constructed lineup and one that combined a lower-owned pairing up top, it’s good to see an ETR win.
It was nice to get back to one of those workmanlike events like the Charles Schwab, where we had good talent up top but a lot of choices to make down low. The roster construction aspect was really interesting last week, and I took a very aggressive approach, specifically with the $8K range. I basically did not allow “just one” $8K player in my lineup; most of mine had zero, and some of them had two. I thought that range was by far the weakest, and I wanted to either fully fade that to be unique or lean into it knowing that many wouldn’t play two from that range. Despite a losing week overall, I’m pleased with how leveraged my lineups were overall. I would do it again.
