Super Bowl week! As has become customary in recent years, the Waste Management Phoenix Open will share the calendar week with the Super Bowl. And with another stacked field featuring 14 of the top 25 players in the world, we should expect some awesome golf and an exciting finish Sunday afternoon.
The Course:
After a few multi-course events, the PGA Tour returns to a traditional, single-course event this week with TPC Scottsdale hosting for the 40th consecutive year. Scottsdale is set to play as a 7,261-yard, par 71 layout with three par 5s, four par 3s, and 11 par 4s. The greens this week will be a poa/bent/rye mix, while the rest of the golf course will be ryegrass through and through.
TPC Scottsdale was originally designed by Tom Weiskopf in 1986, and it was eventually renovated by Weiskopf in 2014. At 7,260 yards, it plays as an average-length PGA Tour setup, and offers plenty of scoring opportunities throughout the golf course. Scottsdale is not without risk, however. True to its desert golf nature, Scottsdale severely punishes big misses. The percentage of tee shots that result in a penalty is among the top five across Tour venues since 2019, as players not only have to deal with the desert on most holes but also hazards and out-of-bounds areas that come into play across the course. Though it is not a true “precision golf” style course, it will give players a hard time if they don’t have control of their golf ball.
