Passing Game Overview
Whether or not offensive mastermind Sean Payton can resuscitate Russell Wilson following Wilson’s career-worst year will likely dictate Denver’s 2023 season. Turning 35 in November, Wilson appeared all but washed during his debut Broncos season, posting career lows in touchdown passes (16), completion rate (60.5%), and adjusted yards per pass attempt (6.9) while absorbing a league-high 55 sacks. Wilson’s rushing impact has been nearly nonexistent in consecutive seasons. There have been rampant rumors that Payton isn’t sold on Wilson, fueled by Denver’s free-agent signing of Jarrett Stidham to a two-year, $10 million contract with $5 million guaranteed. It’s fair to wonder if Wilson could be on a short leash.
The Broncos exercised Jerry Jeudy’s fifth-year contract option for 2024 right after April’s draft, effectively securing Jeudy’s rights for the next two seasons at $17.8 million. One of Denver’s few 2022 bright spots, Jeudy finished extremely strong with a receiving-line average of 6.2/87.2/0.5 across Weeks 13-18. Over the course of last season, Jeudy’s 2.29 yards per route run ranked No. 16 among qualified wide receivers, while his 9.7 yards per target were No. 9. Still just 24 years old, I’m betting Jeudy breaks out in his fourth NFL season and have been drafting him religiously around the fourth-/fifth-round turn in 12-team drafts.
