Understanding optimal lineups for cash games is extremely important, even if you only play tournaments. Players in our cash pool are the ones we believe are the most underpriced, have the best floor/ceiling combo, and typically feature a relatively tight range of outcomes. These are the best plays on the board when considering price, context, and positional scarcity. These are usually pretty good options for GPPs as well.

The optimal GPP lineup will typically mix some of these cash-type plays with higher-variance options, often in correlated lineups. In cash games (where roughly 50% of the field gets paid out), we don’t worry about ownership, game stacks, or correlation. In large-field tournaments, we should be much more mindful of ownership. For more tournament content, check out our projections, and Friday’s live show, Establish The Show: The College Years, with Alex Hardin and Sean Newsham.

With all that said, these are our Top Plays considering the following factors: mean projection, matchup, upside, and value. Ownership is NOT considered here. Generally speaking, these players are what we consider to be “head-to-head and 50/50 considerations”.

They are listed in price descending order (NOT ranked by “best play”). At the bottom, you’ll find suggested rankings by site once salary is accounted for.

QUARTERBACK

Dillon Gabriel (OU – DK $8,900, FD $11,600) – Despite the drastic pass-run splits last week (55 runs, 19 passes) in a bad weather game, we think Oklahoma gets more balanced this week versus Oklahoma State. Gabriel still had 30 fantasy points last week due to his rushing floor and tendency to call his own number near the goal line (eight rushing TDs on the season), which certainly provides paths for bailouts when the passing game is not clicking. While his price tag makes him a tough fit, Gabriel is squarely in play in all formats on both sites. GPP Recommendation: 0 to 2 pass catchers in stack.

Jordan McCloud (JMU – DK $8,100) – The USF transfer has found a home at James Madison, producing similarly to what we saw Todd Centeio do in his one season last year. McCloud has five straight games of 24+ fantasy points and gets a Georgia State defense that is 127th in passing yards allowed per game (in addition to having rather poor overall defensive efficiency metrics). We view McCloud as a stand-out play, especially in cash games where you are gifted a discount double stack. GPP Recommendation: 1 to 3 pass catchers in stack.

Darren Grainger (GAST – DK $7,000) – James Madison is a very good defense, but they are very clearly a pass funnel in terms of where production is generated versus them. The issue is that Grainger does not have the most accurate arm, however, he does have rushing ability that the Dukes have not had to defend this season. On a slate where most quarterbacks are overpriced, Grainger is fairly priced and a viable option (and likely will put you very heavy on this game considering the plays on the James Madison side). GPP Recommendation: 0 to 1 pass catchers in stack.
